On June 23, 2016 the people of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland voted by a significant margin to leave the European Union. Colloquially known as 'Brexit' (Br[itish] Exit), the referendum was described by the Irish Times editorial of Saturday, June 25 as a 'bewildering act of self harm'. Of course, opinion varied widely across the UK. Notably in Scotland, London and Northern Ireland - the only regions where a majority of people voted to remain in the EU.
